resize wont let you resize to any arbitrary amount, theres a minimum size, which appears to be about a gig more than current free space on the partition, and I’ve seen errors reported in boot camp that partition cant be resized due to not being able to move data, both of which lead me to believe the statement that it is by design non destructive.
