Getting into the EFI Shell

Question

With the Power PC based Macs, you could reach the Open Firmware interface by holding down Command+Option+O+F while booting. Is there a similar interface for EFI on the new Intel based Macs? If so, what key combination will bring it up? I have already verified that target disk mode and the boot selector screens work on the new Intel Macs. I simply have no idea how to reach an EFI interface. I’ve tried Command+Option+E+F and Command+Option+F+I, but those do not work.

Answer

I’ve been toying with one myself, and I can almost definitively say that Apple has not actually included the EFI shell on these machines. I’ve tried everything from common Mac startup keys, to uncommon ones, to ancient relics from days of yore, all the way to PC conventions from various vendors and generations. It’s not there.

But all is not lost. The shell itself is available for download from Intel’s website over here, and it supposedly works on Intel Macs. At least, these guys over here claim it does. Your milage may vary, and MG accepts no responsibility for any damage you do to your shiny new iMac by running this.

But it worked for us…

That is because to get into any EFI interface or shell, you need to know terminal. Then crack a root password. I know my comment is outdated, yet I hope someone will read my geeky advice…
