Jesper asks: QuestionHey, I’m used to Linux, and there you have various kernel modules that allows you to “mount” SFTP drives. Also, in emacs, you can get a mode called tramp, which allows you to edit files over SSH. This is quite useful, and the loss of which, has left me less productive than I was. Is there any way to replicate this behavior? I’m aware that you can “Edit in external editor” in many FTP/SFTP clients, but that just doesn’t cut it. Am I stuck with the hideous aquamacs on OSX to do my job? AnswerI had a similar problem a while back and I finally settled on TextWrangler for handling this. It lets you browse the remote SFTP server, pick the file to edit, downloads to a temp file, and when you save it re-uploads to the remove server. I use this for editing almost every file on this server, actually. It’s fast, it’s free, it’s functional. Go get it. It’s big brother BBEdit does it as well, but the BB in BBEdit no longer really applies…
About Adam Knight
Author Biography Adam Knight is one of the founders of Mac Geekery and is a geek at heart. Programmer by day, hacker by night, his daily life revolves around the Macintosh platform, which he has been a user and programmer for since the early days of System 7 when his LCII replaced his Apple //c. In-between tech jobs, he’s managed to learn the basics of any web hacker: PHP, MySQL, Perl, Apache, Linux, *BSD, and the intricacies of ./configure —prefix=~/bombshelter/. Today, codepoet is concentrating on blogging again, writing some software for the Mac by himself (including Notae) and for his company (such as Switchblade) and has a few other toys coming out soon. Interarchy has a ‘NetDisk’ feature which kinda sorta lets you mount an sftp folder as a disk. I say kinda sorta because Interarchy periodically synchronises the NetDisk so changes are not immediately saved to the SFTP volume.
