Controlling Front Row with a Multi-Button Mouse

cherylchase@drupal.org asks:

Question

I have a mac mini that I use as an entertainment center. It doesn’t have a keyboard. I just installed a Gyration air mouse, but I was dismayed to find that Front Row ignores the mouse.

Is there a way to get Front Row to listen to the mouse?

Thanks,

Cheryl

Answer

Yes, with additional software to map the buttons to keystrokes, you can control Front Row with any human-input device.

Take either the software it comes with, if it does, or a third-party generic tool like USB Overdrive and map the buttons on the device to the keystrokes used to control Front Row via the keyboard.

When Front Row is not active, one of the buttons should map to ⌘-ESC to invoke Front Row. You would then setup USB Overdrive to have a profile just for Front Row that maps the keys as specified at the end of the article on using Teleport to control Front Row from another computer.
