Mac GeekeryGet your geek on. |
Can I restore a corrupted partition map without losing data?I have a dual-boot Mac with Windows Vista and OS X and I accidentally wrote a Windows disk signature to the wrong external hard disk under Windows. I then went back into OS X and was presented with a message about the disk not being readable by OS X. I clicked initialise and then realised my mistake. To make matters worse, I also did the same to my backup disk. (Arghhh). There are words that should be used to describe people like me. I don’t even feel worthy of the name “geek” right now but it’s been a long day… I know this is all very stupid, but I just need to write a new (OS X readable) partition table to tell it that there is a Mac OS X extended (journaled) partition there and then I can recover the data. I have not written any new files to the disk – just corrupted the partition table (OS X Disk Utility shows the disk as having a partition scheme of unformatted). This disk has my family digital photos and my iTunes library and because I stupidly trashed the backup too, I’m in real trouble. About markwilson |

It turns out that there is a way to restore any data that has not yet been overwritten on the disk - a utility called Data Rescue II.
More details on my problem and on getting my data back can be found at http://www.markwilson.co.uk/blog/2007/05/recovering-data-after-destroying-the-mac-os-x-partition-table.htm
I hope this is useful to some other desperate soul who accidentally trashes their hard disk.
Cheers, Mark
