My MacBook Pro doesn’t always go to sleep when I close the case. Not every time (a little like my own sleep patterns I suppose). If I open it back up the screen remains black and I am forced to restart. Also, I’m not sure if the fans stay on as it is always about 1000 degrees when I find it. I took it to the nearest Genius and they told me there must be a conflict with the P-list (or something). Any help?

I had a similar problem. Removing USB and other devices from the unit wakes it. If it’s closed, it won’t go back to sleep.
Remove every cable, wait a little bit, then close the computer and wait for sleep.
The Genius was an idiot.

Try resetting the SMC.
Mine sometimes wont go to sleep and sometimes wont wake up correctly (stays in a black screen with no pointer or other real signs of life). Usually closing the lid for a minute then opening it again seems to work. When I do that it seems to think about it a bit then go to sleep which can be woke by hitting enter.
Sometimes pressing the power button also works to either sleep it or make it wake up.
I hate it when I don’t notice it didn’t sleep and I put it in my bag. I get home with a waaaaaayyy hot computer. Luckily no other problems, but it cant be good to sit around hot like that long
