So I’ve been looking around a bit for a way to sync two iTunes libraries (say one on a desktop and one on a laptop). The best I could find so far is syncOtunes, but this doesn’t sync playcounts, ratings, etc, and generally doesn’t really work for me because the music on my notebook is just a subset of the music on my desktop.
So here’s an idea I had, and was wondering how feasible it was: could you get a mounted volume to identify as an ipod? By making sure it has the right directory structure, etc, enough for iTunes to recognize it and sync to it.
After that it would be a relatively simple matter of building an iTunes library on top of that volume, symlinking the right library and preferences file, setting up folder actions…
So is this possible? How does Mac OS X (and iTunes) recognize an iPod as an iPod?
