I’m going to try something, and I’m probably going to regret it, but I’d like to see what happens when I do it.
I’m going to tell the CMS to put everyone’s blog posts on the front page of Mac Geekery. This does a few things that I think work out great for the site in the long run:
- It moves the site squarely in the face of the community. If you have a good tip, trick, hack, or insightful article you can just post it and get the Mac Geekery audience right there reading.
- It does what I really wanted to do in the first place, and that’s bring MG up to be a higher-end tips site with tips from other folks. Right now, and historically, anyone could post a tip to their blog on the site and someone would get around to promoting it. Now someone posts and an admin will get around to nixing the crap.
- It opens up the question of what a wiki really is. I abhor wikis, but I love community. I think a wiki is the wrong answer to the right question, and that question is: How do I get my readership involved? Well, they must author content to be involved. Be that comments or articles. Comments require articles and right now, the two article writers are busy with life. But, what if anyone could write an article, and everyone would see it and comment on it?
After this, I’m going to hack up the question module so that regular users can answer queue questions as well. That comes later. Admins will still delete the chaff questions but users can answer.
Two rules:
- Post an ad and I will delete it and disable your account. This includes any and all links to any and all sites or articles outside of Mac Geekery. Period. If you’d like an ad, buy one. Mac Geekery is a site for full articles on a topic, not for linking to other sites. Go use Digg if you want to spread links.
- Post answers, not questions. Questions go to the forum for answers.
Post away.
If you would like to keep up with only JC and I, subscribe to our blogs directly. I’d rather everyone follow along with the experiment, so I’ll leave it to you to find out how to get those feeds. You’re all smart cookies, I’m sure you can figure it out.
Now, off to finish some articles I’ve been delaying.
